What is tea tree?

Tea tree oil has been used as a medicine by the Aborigines of Australia since ancient times. The leaf water is called hydrolate or flower water and is a byproduct in the production of essential oils.

Many people like to apply tea tree oil directly to their skin, but this is not recommended because such a strong concentration can cause irritation. Instead, choose tea tree (in the form of oil or leaf water) as an ingredient in carefully formulated skin care products that have been clinically tested.

Tea Tree Benefits

Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties

Tea tree has long been used to heal cuts and wounds precisely because of its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. This makes tea an excellent ingredient for fighting acne. A 1990 Australian study in which tea tree oil was compared to benzoyl peroxide found that both drugs were equally effective in treating mild to moderate acne. Tea tree oil is a natural alternative to benzoyl peroxide with potentially fewer side effects.

Soothing Effects

Because tea tree oil has an anti-inflammatory effect, it can also relieve skin irritation and itching. If you have very sensitive skin, you can use tea tree leaf water instead of tea tree oil, which is a milder alternative to essential oil but still has the health benefits of the plant.
