Niacinamide in Korean Cosmetics: Uses and Benefits

Niacinamide or Vitamin B3 is an ingredient that we all should know and use in our beauty treatments.

Niacinamide is a vitamin with amazing potential, as supported by numerous studies.

What is Niacinamide?

Niacinamide is a water-soluble vitamin found in meat, fish, wheat, and small amounts in vegetables. The version produced synthetically for use in cosmetics is well tolerated by all skin types, including sensitive skin and skin prone to rosacea and redness.

It is compatible with all cosmetic products, including those containing retinol, peptides, hyaluronic acid, AHA, BHA, vitamin C and all types of antioxidants. Present in tonics, serums, masks, it impresses with its incredible beneficial effect on the skin.

What does niacinamide do?

Anti-aging and smoothing properties

Over time, the skin tends to slow down the production of important proteins such as keratin, filaggrin, and involucrin. A decrease in the amount of these proteins leads to a loss of skin elasticity and the appearance of wrinkles. Research shows that vitamin B3 can increase the production of collagen and other proteins and therefore improve skin texture and fight wrinkles.

Brightening properties

We know how difficult it is to get rid of hyperpigmentation or brown spots with topical treatments alone. Usually only a mild effect is achieved. Studies show that with daily application of 2-5% niacinamide for 8 weeks, significant reductions in hyperpigmentation are achieved.

To fight blemishes more effectively, you can combine vitamin B3 with tyrosinase inhibitors (an enzyme that stimulates melanin production) such as vitamin C, arbutin, or kojic acid.

Rebuild the skin barrier

The skin barrier is the outer layer of the skin that plays an important role in keeping the skin hydrated and dry. The material between skin cells is composed mainly of fatty acids such as cholesterol and ceramides, which are responsible for the health of the skin barrier.

Niacinamide can increase the synthesis of cholesterol and ceramides, resulting in a healthier and stronger skin barrier, less transepidermal water loss and more hydrated skin.

Minimize enlarged pores

Niacinamide can prevent the buildup of impurities in the pores and help the pores return to their normal size. Sun damage can also make pores more visible, causing what is known as an "orange peel". Higher concentrations of niacinamide can help visibly tighten pores by acting on the supporting elements of the skin.

Anti-acne properties

Although vitamin B3 is not considered one of the standard ingredients for acne treatment, it can help counteract this problem due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

How should i use niacinamide?

As we mentioned, there are several skin care products that contain this vitamin. It is usually found in synergy with other beneficial ingredients such as antioxidants and skin repair and restructuring agents. For maximum results, it is best to choose non-rinse products and apply to clean skin twice a day.

For example, you can apply a niacinamide facial toner after cleansing to moisturize your skin. Or you can use just a face serum for a more intense effect, or mix with your moisturizer. Experiment with what works best for your skin.

Adding this incredible vitamin to your cosmetic routine is always a winning choice. It significantly improves the appearance of the skin, making it more uniform, vibrant and youthful.
