Dandruff - types, causes, treatment

visibility6850 Views comment0 comments person Posted By: Meliora Beauty Shop list In: Beauty tips

Our skin is constantly renewing itself. New skin cells are constantly being formed and old ones are dying off. Usually this happens imperceptibly for us, at most in winter, many suffer from drier skin than in summer, and then you can often see dead skin cells. However, the scalp is often particularly sensitive to various external and internal influences, and flaking of the scalp can be very unpleasant, as dandruff appears on the hair.

What types of dandruff exist?

The main distinction is made between two types of dandruff, namely dry and oily dandruff. They already differ in appearance because the sebaceous scales are larger, often yellowish and get stuck in the hair or on the scalp. As the name suggests, the cause here is oily scalp. It happens when the skin produces too much sebum.

People with oily dandruff tend to also have oily hair that doesn't go away even with daily washing. An oily scalp can also encourage fungus growth, which in turn leads to oily dandruff.

On the other hand, dry scales are much smaller, white and often fall on the shoulders. Here, too, the moisture-fat balance of the skin is disturbed, but in the opposite direction. The skin produces too little sebum, which means that moisture evaporates more easily and the skin dries out. Here, too, itching and a feeling of tension are often felt.

What triggers can dandruff have?

There are different triggers for both oily and dry dandruff, both external and internal. In the case of oily dandruff, too much sugar, alcohol, or dairy, as well as hormonal fluctuations, can cause skin imbalances, as can improper hair care or styling products.

Dry dandruff can also be caused by dry air heating, washing your hair with too hot water, but care, nutrition and hormones can also play a role here. Unfortunately, it is often impossible to say for sure and there is not always an obvious reason.

How to get rid of dandruff for a long time?

First of all, it is important to know what type of dandruff you suffer from, because only then you can act correctly. A yeast fungus on the scalp often plays an important role in oily dandruff, so antifungal dandruff shampoos make sense for a certain period of time. They also often contain salicylic acid, which is anti-inflammatory and helps loosen oily scalp flakes.

For dry dandruff, an anti-dandruff shampoo is not necessarily the right choice. We recommend a mild and nourishing shampoo that hydrates the scalp and helps it retain that moisture. You should avoid fragrances and also make sure not to use too hot water as it dries the skin even more.

You should also avoid too many styling products, especially directly on the scalp, and don't wash your hair too often, and ideally let it air dry.

No matter what type of dandruff, it doesn't have to be permanent, and with the right care, it can be eliminated relatively quickly in most cases.
